HistoryDocumented history
The Sun temple at Rahilya stands in ruins on the bank of the Rahila Sagar lake, near Mahoba. It is attributed to the early Chandela king Rahila, who reigned about 885-905, which makes it one of the oldest surviving Chandela temples, earlier than those at Khajuraho.
The early Chandelas ruled from Mahoba before Khajuraho became their great temple city, and their lakes and temples still mark the town. The temple was damaged around the early 13th century, when the Chandela realm was attacked by the Delhi Sultanate, and worship stopped.
It is now a quiet monument visited by historians of the Chandela style and travellers on the Bundelkhand heritage circuit.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is built of granite on a high plinth, with a sanctum, vestibule and hall. The curved Nagara spire over the sanctum survives only in part. Its plain granite walls show the style before the sandstone carving of Khajuraho.

Documented history
Documented history
