HistoryDocumented history
Bharatpur was the capital of a Jat kingdom founded in the 18th century, famous for its fort of Lohagarh, the 'iron fort' that withstood a British siege in 1805. The rulers of Bharatpur regarded Lakshmana, the younger brother of Rama, as their family deity, and the state's coins and seal bore his name.
The Laxman Mandir in the old city was built in the 19th century, often dated to about 1870. It is one of very few temples in India dedicated mainly to Lakshmana, who is worshipped here with his wife Urmila. It is built of the pink sandstone of Bansi Paharpur and is known for the delicate carving of its pillars, doorways and arches.
ArchitectureDocumented history
