HistoryDocumented history
Patna's guardian goddess is worshipped at two temples, Badi (big) Patan Devi in Maharajganj and Chhoti (small) Patan Devi in Chowk. Local tradition says the city takes its name from the goddess. The Chowk temple stands in the crowded lanes of old Patna and is busiest during the two Navaratris.

When Vishnu's discus cut Sati's body apart, her right thigh and her cloth (pat) are said to have fallen in Magadha, at the two sites in old Patna where the Patan Devi temples now stand.
