HistoryDocumented history

The Bhand Devra temple stands on the bank of a lake inside the Ramgarh crater, a ring of hills about 3 km across in Baran district that geologists recognised in 2020 as an ancient meteorite impact crater. The temple is dated to the 10th or 11th century and was dedicated to Shiva in a tantric Shaiva tradition.

It is often called the 'Khajuraho of Rajasthan' for the erotic (maithuna) sculptures on its walls, and the name Bhand Devra is said to come from them. Much of the temple has fallen; it is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, which announced a restoration in 2025. Two shrines of the Mother goddesses, Kisnai and Annapurna, stand on the hill nearby.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The temple is in the Nagara style, with a sanctum, vestibule and hall on a moulded base; much of the spire has fallen. The walls carry bands of gods, celestial women and maithuna couples, carved in the manner of central Indian temples of the period.

The setting, on the bank of a lake in a ring of hills, is unusual and striking.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The union of figures on the walls of a Shiva temple expresses, in the tantric view, the union of Shiva and Shakti.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The site is gaining attention for both its temple and its crater, now a protected geo-heritage site.

Documented history

Documented history

Interpretation

Interpretation
