HistoryDocumented history
Atru, in Baran district in the Hadoti region, has the remains of several medieval temples. The Gadgach temple is the most important; its history goes back to the 10th century, and a report of the Archaeological Survey in 1905 held that it was standing at least until the middle of the 12th century. An inscription of the Paramara king Jayavarman II, dated 1257, is carved on one of its pillars.
Local tradition says the nearby Shyama Sundara temple was rebuilt from the ruins of the Gadgach temple. Today only the base, parts of the sanctum and carved pillars remain, protected as a monument.
ArchitectureDocumented history
What remains is the moulded base, the lower walls of the sanctum and a number of carved pillars, one with the inscription of 1257. Fragments of sculpture, including deities and decorative bands, lie around the site.
