HistoryDocumented history
Treta ke Thakur, 'the Lord of the Treta age', stands at Naya Ghat on the Sarayu in Ayodhya. Tradition holds that it marks the place where Rama performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice, for which, in the Ramayana's last book, a golden image of Sita was made because she was away in the forest.
Local tradition says the images were found in the Sarayu and installed by a king of Kullu, perhaps around 1700. The temple was later rebuilt or renovated by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, who restored many temples across India.
The doors open to the public only once a year, on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi; for the rest of the year worship takes place behind closed doors.
