HistoryDocumented history
Shravasti, the capital of ancient Kosala, is best known as the city where the Buddha spent many rainy seasons. Jain texts, including the Paumachariyam, also name it as the birthplace of Sambhavanatha, the third tirthankara, and Mahavira is said to have stayed here.
The old Shobhnath temple survives as a ruin on the Mahet mound, the site of the ancient city. It is a brick temple, perhaps of around the 11th century, with a later domed top.
New Digambar and Shvetambar temples have been built near the ruins, and pilgrims visit the Jain and Buddhist sites of Shravasti together.
