HistoryDocumented history

The town of Shri Mahaveerji, formerly the village of Chandanpur on the Gambhir river in Karauli district, is one of the most important Digambara Jain pilgrimage centres of north India. By tradition a cow of the village used to pour its milk on a mound; when its owner dug there, he found an image of Mahavira, and a small shelter was built over the spot.

The image is usually said to have been found in the 17th or 18th century, though some accounts date the image itself much earlier. A large temple grew up around it, and the town now has many other temples, dharmashalas and institutions. The site is an Atishaya Kshetra, a place of miracles, and the cowherd's descendants still take part in the annual chariot festival.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The main temple is a large white and red sandstone building with tall spires and domes, in the modern Jain style, around the sanctum of the found image. A small shrine marks the spot where the image was found.

The complex includes many other temples, a manastambha and large dharmashalas.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Jain tradition does not have puranic stories of this kind; the place is honoured for the image and the miracles linked with it.

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore

The cowherd who found the image is honoured, and his community has a role in the annual festival: the chariot does not move until his descendant touches it.

PhilosophyInterpretation

An image found by a cowherd and honoured by all communities shows that grace is not limited by birth.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The annual fair draws lakhs of pilgrims, Jain and non-Jain, and the town is a major Jain educational centre.

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
