HistoryDocumented history
Diggi, in Malpura tehsil of Tonk district, about 75 km south-west of Jaipur, is known for its temple of Vishnu as Kalyanji, 'the bestower of welfare'. Tradition says it was founded by a king named Digva in very ancient times, and the town is named after him; the present temple is recorded as rebuilt in 1527.
A local account says that the temple was attacked in the time of Aurangzeb and defended by Khangarot Rajputs, but this is not well documented. Since the 1960s an annual foot pilgrimage, the Lakkhi Padayatra, has gone from Jaipur to Diggi in Shravan, drawing more than a lakh of pilgrims.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is built of white marble and sandstone in the Nagara style, with a spire over the sanctum and a hall with sixteen pillars. Its walls and pillars are carved with figures and floral designs.
The four-armed image of Kalyanji stands in the sanctum.
