The most visited temple of Jaipur, inside the City Palace gardens, holding the image of Krishna as Govinda that was brought from Vrindavan. The Kachwaha rulers regarded Govind Dev as the true king of Jaipur and themselves as his ministers.
HistoryDocumented history
Sawai Jai Singh II, who founded Jaipur in 1727, set Govind Dev in a pavilion facing his own Chandra Mahal, so the king could see the god from his palace. The temple has seven darshans (jhankis) a day, and the large hall in front fills with singing devotees.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The image is said to have been made by Krishna's great-grandson Vajranabh, from the memory of Krishna's grandmother, who said its face matched Krishna's. Two other images made at the same time are Madan Mohan and Gopinath, also now in Rajasthan.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Jaipur families often take darshan of all three images (Govind Dev, Gopinath and Madan Mohan of Karauli) on one day, believing that together they show Krishna's whole form.
PhilosophyInterpretation
In Gaudiya Vaishnavism Krishna is the supreme person, approached through loving devotion (bhakti) and the chanting of his names.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple is the devotional heart of Jaipur, crowded on Janmashtami and at the evening darshans, and a living link between Braj and Rajasthan.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
