The Pallava king banished Kanikannan, disciple of Thirumazhisai Alvar, for refusing to sing his praise. The Alvar left with him and told the god: 'Kanikannan is leaving, so am I; roll up your serpent bed and come too.' Vishnu did. When the king begged them back, the Alvar told the god to spread his bed again, and he did, so he is called Yathothkari, 'he who did as he was told'. The image reclines with its head the other way round from usual.
