A Shiva temple and sacred tank on Malabar Hill, among the oldest surviving holy places in Mumbai. Rama is said to have made the sand linga here and drawn water from the earth with an arrow.
HistoryDocumented history
The stepped tank is fed by a spring though it lies close to the sea. Around it stand smaller temples, houses and the samadhis of monks. Today it is a heritage precinct surrounded by tall apartment blocks, and the venue of the Banganga music festival.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Rama stopped here on his way to Lanka in search of Sita. Lakshmana was late in bringing a linga from Kashi, so Rama made one of sand (valuka) and worshipped it. Thirsty, he shot an arrow (baan) into the earth and a stream of the Ganga rose: the Banganga.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The tank is said to be connected to the Ganga under the ground, so its water is fresh beside the salt sea.
PhilosophyInterpretation
A god made of sand by a devotee in need shows that sincerity matters more than material.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Banganga is a rare surviving pre-colonial space in south Mumbai, and its conservation shows the struggle to keep heritage amid real-estate pressure.

स्थल पुराणTradition
