A large Vijayanagara-era temple of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana carved from a single stone, without the usual Hanuman. Since 2015 Andhra Pradesh holds its official Sri Rama Navami celebrations here.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple is one of the largest in Rayalaseema. The Telugu poet Bammera Potana, who translated the Bhagavata, is linked by tradition to Vontimitta, as is the poet-saint Annamacharya, who sang of its Rama. The French traveller Tavernier admired the temple in the 17th century.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are said to have rested here during their exile; Rama struck the ground with an arrow to give Sita water, creating the Rama Tirtham tank. The image is called Ekasila, 'one stone', since all three figures are carved from a single rock.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Two robbers named Vontodu and Mittodu, who became devotees of Rama, are said to have built the first shrine, giving the village its name.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The robbers turned devotees echo the story of Valmiki: anyone can be transformed by the name of Rama.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Vontimitta's new role as the state's Rama Navami venue shows how the 2014 division of Andhra Pradesh reshaped sacred geography too.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
