One of the earliest stone temples of the Chola period, on a hill at Narthamalai near Pudukkottai. It has a rare circular sanctum inside a square base, and is named after Vijayalaya, founder of the imperial Chola line.

Narthamalai is a group of low hills with rock-cut caves and temples. The Vijayalaya Cholisvaram stands in front of two cave temples and is surrounded by eight small subsidiary shrines, six of which survive. Its four-storey vimana is an early model of the Chola temples that culminated at Thanjavur.
