The temple sits in the Junnar area, the homeland of Shivaji, near the Lenyadri caves and Shivneri fort. It has a high stone wall, lamp towers and a golden dome. It is among the richest of the Ashtavinayak shrines.

Indra created the demon Vighnasura to spoil a king's sacrifice. Vighnasura troubled all the sages until Ganesha defeated him. Surrendering, the demon asked that the god be called after him, and so he is Vighnahar or Vighneshwar.
