The temple that gave Tiruvallur its name, where Vishnu asked his host 'Where shall I lie down?' (evvul?). Pilgrims come on new-moon days to bathe in its tank and pray for healing.

HistoryDocumented history

The town of Tiruvallur grew around the temple, which is about 40 km west of Chennai. Its large tank, Hrittapanasini, is believed to cure illness, and crowds gather on every new-moon day.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The sage Salihotra offered his only meal of the day to an old Brahmin guest. The guest then asked, 'Evvul?', 'where shall I lie down?', and when shown the sage's hut he lay down and revealed himself as Vishnu. The place was named Thiruevvul.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Few stories beyond the temple's own legend have been recorded for this shrine; local traditions are still to be collected.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Vishnu reclining on the serpent is the still centre of creation: the world rises and falls while he rests in yogic sleep, yet he watches over all.

Meaning todayInterpretation

On new-moon days, especially Thai Amavasai, thousands bathe in the tank and offer salt and pepper for the cure of skin and other ailments.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
