The great Vishnu temple of Kanchipuram, where Vishnu is worshipped as Varadaraja, 'king of boon-givers'. An ancient image of fig wood, the Athi Varadar, lies under the temple tank and is brought out for worship only once in 40 years. With Srirangam and Tirumala it is one of the three holiest Sri Vaishnava shrines.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple covers about 9 ha in the eastern part of Kanchipuram, known as Vishnu Kanchi. Its present buildings date from the Chola period onwards, and it holds hundreds of inscriptions from the Cholas, Pandyas and Vijayanagara kings. The philosopher Ramanuja spent his early years here under the guidance of Thirukachi Nambi. The Vijayanagara-era hundred-pillared hall is famous for chains carved from a single stone.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Brahma performed a great sacrifice at Kanchi. His consort Saraswati, angry at being left out, came as the flooding Vegavati river to wash it away, and Vishnu lay down across the river to stop her. He then rose from the sacrificial fire as Varadaraja, the giver of boons, and stands on the small hill called Hastigiri.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The original image was carved from the wood of a fig (athi) tree. Tradition says it was damaged and so was laid to rest in a silver casket under the Anantha Saras tank, with a stone image installed in its place; every 40 years the tank is drained and the Athi Varadar is worshipped for 48 days. Pilgrims touch the gold and silver lizards carved on the ceiling, believed to remove the effects of ill omens.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Varadaraja is the god who gives freely. Ramanuja's teaching that surrender to God's grace is open to all was shaped in this temple, and his guru Thirukachi Nambi is said to have spoken directly with the deity.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The 2019 Athi Varadar festival drew more than a crore of people in 48 days and showed how strongly the tradition lives on. The temple's Garuda Sevai during the Vaikasi festival is one of Kanchipuram's great events.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
