A cave shrine of the goddess in the Trikuta hills, reached by a trek of about 12-13 km from Katra. The goddess is worshipped as three natural rock forms (pindis) of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. It is one of India's most visited pilgrimages.
HistoryDocumented history
Devotion at the cave is old, but the pilgrimage grew hugely in the 20th century. Since the Shrine Board took over, the track, rest houses and helicopter and ropeway services have been built up.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The goddess was born in the south as a girl, Vaishnavi, from the combined power of the three goddesses, and did penance to marry Vishnu as Rama. Rama promised to marry her in the Kali age as Kalki and asked her to wait in the Trikuta hills.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Pandit Shridhar, a devotee, was blessed with a feast by the goddess in the form of a girl. Bhairon Nath, a tantric, pursued her; she hid in the Ardhkuwari cave for nine months, then beheaded him at the main cave. Forgiven, he asked that pilgrims visit his temple too, which they do to complete the yatra.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The three pindis show Devi as one power with three aspects: strength, prosperity and knowledge. The forgiveness of Bhairon teaches that even an enemy can be redeemed.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The shrine is a model of large-scale pilgrimage management and also of its pressures: crowd safety, waste and mountain ecology.
