The main Shiva temple of Talakadu, a town on the Kaveri that was once the capital of the Western Gangas and is now half-buried in sand dunes. Every twelve years or so the Panchalinga Darshana festival honours its five Shiva temples together.

Many temples of Talakadu lie under the sand and have been dug out in parts. Vaidyeshwara is built in granite with carvings of doorkeepers and gods. Pilgrims visit the five lingas, Vaidyeshwara, Arkeshwara, Pataleshwara, Maraleshwara and Mallikarjuna, in one day during the Panchalinga Darshana.

Alamelamma, wife of the Vijayanagara governor of Srirangapatna, is said to have cursed Talakadu to become sand and the Mysore kings to have no heirs when the Wodeyars tried to take her jewels. She drowned herself in the Kaveri.
