A Kanchipuram temple that holds four Divya Desams in one compound: Thiruooragam, Thiruneeragam, Thirukaragam and Thirukarvaanam. Its huge image of Trivikrama, measuring the worlds, is one of the largest Vishnu images in Tamil Nadu.
HistoryDocumented history
The main shrine, Thiruooragam, has a towering image of Trivikrama with one leg raised to the sky. Three other Divya Desams, originally separate, now stand as smaller shrines in the same compound: Thiruneeragam (Jagadeeswara), Thirukaragam (Karunakara) and Thirukarvaanam (Kalvar).
Sthala PuranaTradition
Mahabali, the generous demon king, asked to see the form in which Vishnu as Vamana had measured the worlds. Since the image is too vast to take in at once, Vishnu also appears here as a serpent (Ooragam) so that Mahabali could see him whole.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Few stories beyond the temple's own legend have been recorded for this shrine; local traditions are still to be collected.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Vishnu standing is the god ready to act: he waits at the door of the shrine to step out and meet anyone who calls on him.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Pilgrims can complete four of the 108 Divya Desams in a single visit, which makes the temple a busy stop on the Kanchipuram circuit.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
