Living temple

A small Ganesha shrine on the top of the Rockfort, an 83-metre rock in the middle of Tiruchirappalli. The rock also holds the Thayumanavar Shiva temple and Pallava cave temples.

HistoryDocumented history

About 400 steps cut into the rock lead past the Thayumanavar temple to the summit. A Pallava cave on the rock has a famous relief of Shiva receiving the Ganga, and an inscription of Mahendravarman I. From the top, Srirangam and the Kaveri are visible.

Sthala PuranaTradition

No ancient purana is recorded.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Vibhishana was carrying the image of Ranganatha to Lanka and had been told not to set it down. Ganesha, disguised as a boy, took it from him and placed it at Srirangam. When Vibhishana chased him, the boy ran up the rock, and Vibhishana struck him on the head; the image still shows a dent.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Ganesha's trick keeps Ranganatha in Srirangam, and the obstacle-remover places obstacles where they serve the good.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Rockfort is the symbol of Tiruchirappalli; at Vinayaka Chaturthi a giant modakam is offered.

Interpretation

Interpretation
