The seashore temple of Murugan at Tiruchendur, the second of his six abodes, where he is said to have defeated the demon Surapadman. The Soorasamharam enacted on the beach during Kanda Sashti draws vast crowds.
HistoryDocumented history
Tiruchendur is the only one of Murugan's six abodes on the seashore; the sea comes within metres of the temple. The ancient poem Thirumurugatruppadai names it, and Arunagirinathar sang many hymns here in the 15th century. In 1648 the Dutch occupied the temple during their wars with the Portuguese and carried off its festival image, which was later recovered. The present gopuram was built by monks of the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The demon Surapadman oppressed the gods. Murugan, born from sparks of Shiva's third eye, camped here with his army and fought him for six days. On the last day Surapadman turned himself into a great mango tree; Murugan split it with his spear, and the two halves became his peacock mount and his rooster banner. After the victory Murugan worshipped Shiva here.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The Shanmukha image is said to have shone through the sea after the Dutch threw it overboard, and a devotee named Vadamalaiyappa Pillai found it guided by a dream. The Nazhi Kinaru, a small well near the sea, gives sweet water.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Surapadman stands for the ego, and his defeat is the defeat of pride. Even the enemy, split by the spear, becomes Murugan's peacock and flag: nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The Soorasamharam on the beach during Kanda Sashti draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, many fasting for six days. The temple is one of the largest pilgrimage centres in southern Tamil Nadu.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
