An old Shiva temple in north Chennai, a Paadal Petra Sthalam rich in Chola inscriptions. Its linga, Adipureeswarar, is kept under a cover that is removed only for three days a year, and the goddess Vadivudai Amman is widely worshipped.

The temple has many Chola inscriptions that record dancers, singers and endowments. The saint Sundarar married Sangiliyar here, and the poet-saint Pattinathar's shrine is on the seashore nearby. The goddess Vadivudai Amman is one of three goddesses of north Chennai that devotees traditionally visit on the same full-moon Friday.

The linga is said to have risen from an anthill, and is kept under a cover of sandalwood and metal. It is uncovered only on the full moon of Karthigai.
