Thirumangai Alvar was born at nearby Thirukuraiyalur and ruled this area as a chieftain. Thirunagari has a shrine to the Alvar and his wife Kumudavalli.

Kumudavalli agreed to marry the chieftain only if he became a Vaishnava and fed a thousand devotees daily. To pay for it he took to highway robbery. Vishnu came in disguise as a bridegroom, and when the Alvar tried to rob him, the god taught him the eight-syllable mantra and he became a saint. The robbery is enacted each year as the Vedupari festival.

மன்னர் வைணவராகி நாள்தோறும் ஆயிரம் அடியார்க்கு உணவளித்தால்தான் மணப்பதாகக் குமுதவல்லி சொன்னாள். செலவுக்காக அவர் வழிப்பறி செய்யத் தொடங்கினார். விஷ்ணு மணமகனாக மாறுவேடத்தில் வந்தார்; ஆழ்வார் அவரைக் கொள்ளையடிக்க முயன்றபோது இறைவன் அவருக்கு எட்டெழுத்து மந்திரத்தை உபதேசிக்க அவர் அடியாரானார். இந்நிகழ்வு ஆண்டுதோறும் வேடுபறித் திருவிழாவாக நடிக்கப்படுகிறது.
