The temple is one of the Navagraha shrines of the Kaveri delta, the one for Saturn. Sani Peyarchi, Saturn's move into a new sign about every two and a half years, draws vast crowds who bathe in the tank and offer gingelly oil.

King Nala, afflicted by Saturn, lost his kingdom and wandered with his wife Damayanti. When he came to Thirunallar and bathed in the tank, Saturn released him, and the tank was named Nala Theertham.
