The temple is one of the eight Veeratta sthalams where Shiva is said to have destroyed evil. The goddess Abirami is beloved through the Abirami Anthadi, a hundred-verse hymn by the priest-poet Abirami Bhattar.

Markandeya was fated to die at sixteen. When Yama came, the boy clung to the linga, and Shiva burst out of it and kicked Yama away, granting Markandeya eternal youth.

மார்க்கண்டேயருக்குப் பதினாறு வயதில் மரணம் விதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. எமன் வந்தபோது சிறுவன் லிங்கத்தைத் தழுவிக்கொண்டான்; சிவன் லிங்கத்திலிருந்து வெளிப்பட்டு எமனை உதைத்து, மார்க்கண்டேயருக்கு என்றும் பதினாறு வயதை அருளினார்.
