The shrine stands on an artificial hill reached by 60 steps, said to stand for the 60 years of the Tamil calendar cycle. Shiva and Parvati have shrines at the lower level, so that Murugan, the teacher, sits above his father. Swamimalai is also famous for its bronze-casting workshops.

When Brahma could not explain the meaning of Om, Murugan imprisoned him. Shiva asked his son to explain it, and Murugan did so with his father sitting as his pupil.
