The Divya Desam of Mamallapuram, where Vishnu lies on the bare ground rather than on his serpent. Bhoothath Alvar, one of the first three Alvars, was born here.

HistoryDocumented history

The Pallava port of Mamallapuram had a Vishnu shrine near the sea, sung by Thirumangai Alvar. The present temple, set back from the shore, was built in the Vijayanagara period. Bhoothath Alvar was born here.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The sage Pundarika gathered lotuses to offer to Vishnu at the Milky Ocean, and began emptying the sea with his hands to reach him. Vishnu came as an old man, asked for food, and while the sage was away lay down on the bare ground (sthala) to wait. On his return the sage found the god himself.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Few stories beyond the temple's own legend have been recorded for this shrine; local traditions are still to be collected.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Vishnu reclining on the serpent is the still centre of creation: the world rises and falls while he rests in yogic sleep, yet he watches over all.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The temple is visited by many of the tourists who come to Mamallapuram's UNESCO monuments.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
