The Shiva temple of the wind (Vayu) among the five element shrines of the south, named after a spider (sri), a snake (kala) and an elephant (hasti) who worshipped here. It is famous for the hunter-saint Kannappa and for rites to ease the influence of Rahu and Ketu.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple lies at the foot of a hill by the Swarnamukhi river. The Cholas, Vijayanagara kings and later chiefs added halls and towers. The linga is never touched by priests: offerings are made to a golden covering, and a lamp in the sanctum flickers though there is no window, which devotees take as the breath of the Vayu linga.
Sthala PuranaTradition
A spider wove webs over the linga to shield it, a snake laid gems on it, and an elephant washed it with river water. Each thought the others' offerings were insults, and they fought and died together; Shiva granted all three liberation, and the place took their names.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The hunter Thinnadu offered the god meat and water carried in his mouth. When the linga's eye began to bleed, he plucked out his own eye to replace it, and was ready to give the second when Shiva stopped him and named him Kannappa, 'he who gave his eye'.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The animals and the hunter show that true devotion is judged by love, not by correct ritual. As the Vayu shrine, it teaches that the divine is as near and unseen as breath.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Rahu-Ketu pujas draw large numbers of people anxious about astrology, while the Kannappa story remains a powerful image of devotion from outside the Brahmin fold.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
