Sreevallabha is among the best-known temples of the old Travancore region. Its granite flagstaff, a single stone topped by Garuda, is famous, and Kathakali is staged in the temple as a votive offering on most nights of the year.

A pious woman, Shankaramangalathu Amma, fasted on Ekadasi and fed a brahmachari on each Dvadasi. The demon Tholakasura troubled the area; Vishnu came, killed him, and appeared to her as a young brahmachari, staying on as Sreevallabha.
