The first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, on the Saurashtra coast. Sacked by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026 and attacked repeatedly afterwards, it was rebuilt each time; the present temple was raised after Independence on the initiative of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and consecrated in 1951.
HistoryDocumented history
Somnath was among the wealthiest temples of western India by the 11th century, which made it a target. Its repeated destruction and rebuilding became, for many Indians, a symbol of survival, and K. M. Munshi's writings shaped this memory. Its rebuilding was a debated act of the new republic.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Chandra, the moon god, married the 27 daughters of Daksha but favoured only Rohini. Daksha cursed him to waste away. Chandra worshipped Shiva at Prabhas and was saved: he would wane and wax, which explains the moon's phases. Shiva stayed as Somanatha, 'lord of Soma (the moon)'. Tradition says the temple was built in gold by Soma, in silver by Ravana, in wood by Krishna and in stone by Bhimadeva.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The Baan Stambh (arrow pillar) on the sea wall bears an inscription saying there is no land in a straight line between it and the South Pole. Prabhas is also where Krishna is believed to have left his body at Bhalka Tirtha, struck by a hunter's arrow.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The moon's waning and waxing under Shiva's protection is a teaching on time, decay and renewal. Somnath's own history of fall and rise mirrors its legend.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Somnath shows how heritage becomes part of national identity, and the debates about state, religion and memory that come with it. Today it is also known for its sea-facing light-and-sound show and well-organised pilgrim facilities.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
