A hill temple of Vishnu combining the boar (Varaha) and man-lion (Narasimha) forms. The image is kept covered in sandalwood paste all year and is revealed only once, on Akshaya Tritiya, in the Chandanotsavam festival.
HistoryDocumented history
Inscriptions from the 11th century onward record gifts by the Eastern Gangas, the Gajapatis and Vijayanagara. The temple's black-stone halls and its chariot-shaped sanctum show the influence of Odisha. Today the city of Visakhapatnam has grown around the hill.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Hiranyakashipu's attendants threw Prahlada into the sea and dropped this hill on him, but Vishnu lifted him free. Prahlada asked to see the god in the forms that killed both demon brothers, Hiranyaksha (by Varaha) and Hiranyakashipu (by Narasimha), and Vishnu appeared here as both in one.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The god is so fierce that his heat must be cooled with sandalwood paste. On Chandanotsavam the old paste is removed and devotees see the true form (nijarupa darshanam) for a few hours, before about 500 kg of fresh paste is applied.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The combined form shows a god who protects the devotee in every crisis; the sandal covering teaches that the divine is mostly hidden and seen only by grace.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Simhachalam is a landmark of Visakhapatnam and one of the richest temples in Andhra Pradesh; the 2025 wall collapse during Chandanotsavam prompted new questions about crowd safety.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
