Ruined / monumentDravida (South Indian)PallavaUNESCO World Heritage Site (part of)ASI Monument of National Importance

One of the earliest structural (built, not rock-cut) stone temples of South India, standing on the Bay of Bengal. It holds two Shiva shrines and a reclining Vishnu between them, and is part of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram (UNESCO).

HistoryDocumented history

Mamallapuram was the Pallava port. Under Rajasimha it moved from carving temples out of rock to building them, a step that led to the great Dravida temples of the Cholas. A sea wall now protects the salt-eroded structure.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Local tradition links the site to Sthalasayana Perumal, Vishnu reclining on the ground, and to the sage Pundarika. The town's other name, Mahabalipuram, recalls the demon king Mahabali.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

European sailors called the coast 'Seven Pagodas', and legend says six more temples were swallowed by the sea out of divine jealousy at the city's beauty. Underwater finds after 2004 gave the story new life.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Shiva and Vishnu sharing one temple shows the Pallava court's openness to both traditions.

Meaning todayInterpretation

A 1,300-year-old temple facing rising seas makes the Shore Temple a symbol of climate risk to coastal heritage. It is also one of India's most visited monuments.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
