A sacred hill crowned by more than 850 Jain temples, the holiest pilgrimage site of the Shvetambara Jains. The chief temple is of Adinatha (Rishabhanatha), the first Tirthankara, who is said to have preached here.

HistoryDocumented history

About 3,500 steps lead up to the summit, where the temples are grouped in nine walled enclosures (tuks), each built by a patron family. Many were endowed by merchants of Gujarat and Rajasthan from the 16th to 19th centuries. No one, not even the priests, stays on the hill at night, as it is the home of the gods.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Rishabhanatha preached here, and his grandson Pundarika attained liberation on the hill, which is also called Pundarikagiri. Countless saints are said to have reached moksha on Shatrunjaya, 'the place of victory over enemies' (the inner passions).

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

A Muslim saint, Angar Pir, has a shrine on the hill, and childless women offer cradles there; Jain tradition remembers him as having protected the temples.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The climb is itself a form of tapas: pilgrims often fast, and the 'Navvanu yatra' of 99 ascents is a vow of discipline and renunciation.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Palitana is a living centre of Jain identity; its meat ban made news as the first such law for a whole town.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
