Sharada Peeth

The ruined temple of the goddess Sharada in the Neelum valley, once one of the great centres of learning in South Asia and the source of the Sharada script. Counted among the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, it has been beyond reach of most Indian pilgrims since 1947.

HistoryDocumented history

Sharada Peeth was a temple and a university between roughly the 6th and 12th centuries, famous for its library and scholars; the Sharada script used to write Kashmiri and Sanskrit is named after it. Kalhana and Al-Biruni both describe it. Pilgrimage declined in later centuries, and the Dogra ruler Gulab Singh repaired the shrine. Since the 1947-48 war it has lain on the Pakistani side of the Line of Control, and the stone ruins stand roofless above the Neelum river. Calls for a pilgrim corridor have been made by both sides, but none has opened.

Sthala PuranaTradition

When Sati gave up her life at her father Daksha's sacrifice, Shiva wandered the worlds carrying her body in grief, and Vishnu's discus cut it into pieces. Wherever a part fell, a Shakti Peetha arose. Sati's right hand is said to have fallen at Sharada, which became the seat of the goddess of learning.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Scholars once had to win debates at Sharada Peeth to earn the title of sarvajna, 'all-knowing'. Adi Shankara is said to have ascended its Sarvajna Peetha, the throne of wisdom, after answering scholars from all four directions.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Sharada is knowledge as a goddess: here learning itself was an act of worship. Its ruin is also a reminder of how easily centres of learning can be lost.

Meaning todayInterpretation

For Kashmiri Pandits the temple is a symbol of a lost homeland, and the 2023 temple at Teetwal faces it from across the border. The site is often raised in discussions of cross-border religious access.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
