Living templeDravida (South Indian)Rock-cut (monolithic)108 Divya Desams (Vaishnava)ASI Monument of National Importance

A Divya Desam at the foot of Thirumayam fort with one of the largest rock-cut reclining Vishnu images in India, carved into the living rock around the 8th century.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple is built against the hill below Thirumayam fort. Its rock-cut cave shrine holds a huge image of Vishnu reclining on Adishesha, surrounded by gods and the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, carved in the early medieval period. A rock-cut Shiva shrine stands beside it in the same hill.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The serpent Adishesha is said to have breathed fire to drive off the demons Madhu and Kaitabha when they tried to steal the earth goddess, and the scene is carved in the rock around the reclining god.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Few stories beyond the temple's own legend have been recorded for this shrine; local traditions are still to be collected.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Vishnu reclining on the serpent is the still centre of creation: the world rises and falls while he rests in yogic sleep, yet he watches over all.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The fort, the cave temples and the village make Thirumayam a popular stop for visitors to the Chettinad region.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
