The largest Vishnu temple in the temple town of Kumbakonam, where Vishnu reclines as Sarangapani, 'holder of the bow Saranga'. Its inner shrine is built as a chariot drawn by horses and elephants, and its eleven-tiered tower is about 50 m high.

HistoryDocumented history

Kumbakonam, on the Kaveri, is a town of temples, and Sarangapani is the chief Vishnu temple among them. Its central shrine, called the Vaidika Vimana, is built as a chariot with stone wheels, horses and elephants. The Raja Gopuram, about 50 m high, is one of the tallest in Tamil Nadu. The temple faces the Potramarai tank, which it shares with the town's festivals.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The sage Hema prayed to have Lakshmi as his daughter, and she appeared in the Potramarai tank as Komalavalli. Vishnu came down from heaven in a chariot to marry her, which is why the shrine is shaped like a chariot.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The Vaishnava teacher Nathamuni heard pilgrims singing ten verses of Nammalvar beginning with 'Aravamudhe' here. Searching for the rest, he went on to recover the whole Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 4,000 hymns of the Alvars.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The chariot-shrine shows a god on the move, who comes down to meet his devotees. The recovery of the Alvars' hymns from a few verses heard here is remembered as the rebirth of Tamil Vaishnava devotion.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The temple is central to Kumbakonam's festivals, including the Mahamaham held every twelve years. Its chariot festival, with two great chariots, fills the streets of the town.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
