Living temple

A shrine of an eighteen-armed goddess carved in the cliff of a hill with seven peaks in the Sahyadris near Nashik. It is the 'half' of the three and a half Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra.

HistoryDocumented history

The image is carved in a niche on the cliff face and smeared with sindoor. Pilgrims climb the steps or take the funicular; many continue to Nashik and Trimbakeshwar. A sacrifice of a goat on Dussehra, long a custom, was stopped by court order and then partly restored, a matter of ongoing debate.

Sthala PuranaTradition

After Mahishasura was killed, the goddess rested on this hill. Another story says Hanuman passed here with the Sanjeevani hill, and Rama and Sita visited during their exile in nearby Panchavati.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The goddess is called 'half' a peetha because the syllable 'Om' has three and a half measures: Mahur, Tuljapur and Kolhapur make three, and Saptashrungi the final half-syllable.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The eighteen arms carry the weapons of all the gods, showing that the goddess gathers every power in herself.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The funicular and road have made the shrine reachable for the elderly and disabled, while raising concerns about crowds on a fragile hill.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
