HistoryDocumented history
The Samadhishvara temple stands in Chittorgarh fort, near the Gaumukh reservoir and the Vijay Stambha. It is attributed to the Paramara king Bhoja of Malwa in the 11th century, when Chittor was under Paramara control, and an inscription records its renovation by Rana Mokal of Mewar in 1428; it is therefore also called Mokalji's temple.
Chittorgarh is the great fort of Mewar, besieged three times in 1303, 1535 and 1568, and is part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. The temple is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the fort and is still in worship.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple has a sanctum, vestibule and hall with porches on three sides, in the Nagara style, and its outer walls are richly carved with deities and decorative bands. The sanctum holds a large three-faced (Trimurti) image of Shiva against the back wall.
The Gaumukh reservoir, fed by a spring through a cow-mouth spout, lies just below.

The three faces of Shiva show him as creator, preserver and destroyer in one.

Documented history
Documented history
