The temple stands in a small town on the railway between Bhubaneswar and Puri. Its Krishna image is said to have been brought from the south by a Gajapati king of Odisha. On Amla Navami the feet of Radha are uncovered for darshan, the only day in the year.

An old Brahmin promised his daughter to a young Brahmin who had served him, with Gopal as witness. When the old man's family denied the promise, Gopal walked with the young man to bear witness, on condition that he not look back. At Cuttack the young man heard no footsteps and turned, and Gopal stayed.
