The ruins of a great Shiva temple complex begun by Mularaja, founder of the Chaulukya dynasty, and completed by Siddharaja Jayasimha in the 12th century. It was destroyed by the army of Alauddin Khalji, and part of it was later turned into a mosque.

HistoryDocumented history

What survives are two pairs of tall carved pillars with a beam, and parts of the gateway and surrounding shrines; the western part of the complex was built into a mosque that is still in use. The scale of the remains shows the complex was among the largest in western India.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Siddhpur is an ancient tirtha on the Saraswati, said to be where the sage Kardama and Devahuti lived and where their son Kapila was born. It is the one place where rites for a dead mother (matru shraddha) are specially performed, at Bindu Sarovar.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The town's name is popularly linked to Siddharaja, who completed the temple, though Siddhpur is also explained as the place of the siddha Kapila.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A temple to Rudra, the fierce form of Shiva, now itself in ruins, recalls the impermanence that Shiva embodies.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Rudra Mahalaya is an important site for the history of Chaulukya architecture and of the conversion of temple sites under the Sultanates.

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation
