A temple of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Adishesha, on an island in the Kaveri. It is the first of the three Ranga shrines along the river, and the town later became Tipu Sultan's capital.
HistoryDocumented history
The town takes its name from the temple. It served as a Vijayanagara governor's seat, then as the capital of the Wodeyars and of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan, whose palace and mosque stand nearby. The temple received grants from Tipu as well as from the Wodeyars.

Gautama rishi is said to have worshipped Vishnu here, and the river goddess Kaveri prayed that Ranganatha would rest on her islands. He lies on three of them: Adi Ranga at Srirangapatna, Madhya Ranga at Shivanasamudra and Antya Ranga at Srirangam.
