रणकपुर जैन मंदिर

A great four-faced Jain temple of Adinatha built from 1437 by the merchant Dharna Shah, with land granted by Rana Kumbha of Mewar. Its 1,444 carved marble pillars, no two alike, make it one of the most celebrated buildings in India.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple is built on a high plinth, with four entrances leading to the central sanctum, where the four-faced image of Adinatha looks in every direction. Halls, domes and 80 smaller spires rise around it. Light falls through the open courts onto the white marble pillars.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Dharna Shah, a minister of Rana Kumbha, saw in a dream a celestial vehicle (Nalini Gulma Vimana) and resolved to build a temple in its image.
