A Jyotirlinga temple on Pamban Island, where tradition says Rama worshipped Shiva. It is one of the Char Dham and is famous for its pillared corridors, the longest of any Hindu temple in India, and its 22 holy wells (theerthams).

HistoryDocumented history

Pandya kings, Sri Lankan and Jaffna rulers, and later the Sethupathis of Ramnad all built here. The Sethupathis, whose name means 'lords of the causeway', were its hereditary protectors, and Muthuramalinga Sethupathi built the great third corridor in the late 18th century. The corridors together run to about 3,850 feet (about 1,170 m).

Sthala PuranaTradition

Two versions are told. In the best-known, Rama, after killing Ravana, a Brahmin, wished to atone and worship Shiva; in another, he worshipped Shiva here before crossing to Lanka. He sent Hanuman to Kailasa for a linga, but as the auspicious hour neared, a linga of sand was made (by Sita, in most tellings) and Rama worshipped it as the Ramalingam. Hanuman returned with his linga, the Vishwalingam, and Rama ordered that it be worshipped first, to honour Hanuman's effort.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Pilgrims bathe in the 22 wells inside the temple, each with its own taste and story. The traditional pilgrimage links Kashi and Rameswaram: Ganga water carried from Varanasi is poured on the linga here, and sand from Rameswaram is taken back to the Ganga.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A Vaishnava hero worshipping Shiva shows the unity of the two traditions. The story of Rama's atonement teaches that even righteous victory carries a moral cost that must be acknowledged.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Kashi-Rameswaram loop is a living symbol of the cultural unity of north and south India. The Ram Setu story also connects the temple to debates about heritage and coastal ecology.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
