One of the oldest temples in Chennai, where Vishnu is worshipped as Krishna the charioteer of Arjuna, with a moustache and the marks of Bhishma's arrows on his face. It holds shrines to five forms of Vishnu and was sung by three Alvars.

HistoryDocumented history

Triplicane takes its name from Thiru-alli-keni, the sacred lily pond that is now the temple tank. Peyalvar, Thirumazhisai Alvar and Thirumangai Alvar sang of the shrine, and a Pallava inscription of the 8th century is its oldest record. The temple holds five main shrines: Parthasarathy, Ranganatha, Rama, Gajendra Varada and Narasimha. The poet Subramania Bharati lived nearby; in 1921 he was struck by the temple elephant, shortly before his death.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The sage Sumati longed to see Vishnu as the charioteer of the Mahabharata war. Vishnu appeared to him here as Krishna holding a conch, standing with his wife Rukmini, brother Balarama, son Pradyumna, grandson Aniruddha and friend Satyaki.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The image carries scars said to be from Bhishma's arrows. Unusually, Krishna here has a moustache and holds no discus, because he promised not to take up arms in the war.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Parthasarathy is Krishna as the guide of the Bhagavad Gita, who drives the chariot but leaves the fighting to Arjuna. The image speaks of a god who walks beside us and bears our wounds.

Meaning todayInterpretation

In the heart of old Chennai the temple is a centre of Sri Vaishnava life, and its Vaikunta Ekadasi draws huge crowds. Its tank and streets are a living part of the city's history.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
