A cave shrine of Narasimha halfway up Mangalagiri hill, where the god is offered panakam, a jaggery drink. Half of whatever is poured into his mouth is said to be swallowed and half returned, whatever the amount.
HistoryDocumented history
The hill has a shrine to Narasimha in a cave, reached by about 600 steps, and a larger temple of Lakshmi Narasimha at its foot. Vijayanagara inscriptions record gifts, and the zamindar of Amaravathi built the lower temple's tall gopuram. The town is also known for its handloom Mangalagiri saris.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The demon Namuchi won a boon that he could not be killed by anything wet or dry. Vishnu, as Narasimha, killed him with the foam of the sea, which is neither, and the god's fury was cooled by drinking panakam, a cool drink of jaggery and water.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Though gallons of panakam are poured every day, no ants are seen on the hill, which devotees count as a wonder. Geologists suggest the hill may be an old volcano, and some link the drink offering to that.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The god accepts only half and returns half as prasadam, showing that offering and receiving are one exchange of love.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Mangalagiri lies in the Amaravathi capital region, and its temples, weaving and new IT parks show old and new Andhra side by side.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
