The hilltop temple of Murugan as a young renunciant holding only a staff, the third of his six abodes (Arupadai Veedu). Its image is said to be made of nine poisonous herbs and minerals by the siddha Bhogar. It is among the most visited temples in South India.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple stands on Sivagiri, a hill about 150 m high, reached by about 690 steps, a winch railway and a rope car. At the foot of the hill is the older shrine of Thiru Avinankudi, which the Tamil poem Thirumurugatruppadai names as one of Murugan's abodes. Kings of the Chera, Pandya and Nayaka lines are linked with the temple's growth. It is one of the richest temples in Tamil Nadu, and its sweet offering, the panchamirtham, carries a GI tag.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Narada brought a divine mango to Shiva and Parvati, and they offered it to whichever son went around the world first. Murugan set off on his peacock; Ganesha simply walked around his parents, saying they were his world, and won. Hurt, Murugan left Kailasa and stood on this hill as a renunciant. Parvati came and told him, 'Pazham nee', 'you yourself are the fruit', which gave the place its name.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The demon Idumban carried two hills on a pole for the sage Agastya and set them down here; Murugan stopped him from lifting them again. Pilgrims still carry the kavadi, a pole with offerings on both ends, in memory of Idumban. Sacred water and milk poured over the navapashanam image are believed to gain healing power.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The young god who gives up everything is Murugan at his most profound: he holds only a staff, showing that wisdom begins when we let go of what we want.
Meaning todayInterpretation
At Thai Poosam hundreds of thousands walk to Palani, many carrying kavadi or with their heads shaved. The temple's charities and educational institutions are important in the region.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
