The temple of Vishnu as Padmanabha, reclining on the serpent Ananta, gives Thiruvananthapuram (city of Ananta) its name. It blends Kerala and Tamil Dravida styles, and was the state temple of Travancore. The opening of its vaults in 2011 revealed one of the largest known temple treasures.

HistoryDocumented history

The shrine is old enough to be sung by Nammalvar, but the present temple dates from Marthanda Varma's 18th-century rebuilding. His dedication of the Travancore state to the deity made the temple the kingdom's spiritual centre. Since the 2011 inventory the vaults, especially the unopened Vault B, have drawn wide public interest.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Divakara Muni (in other versions Vilwamangalam Swamiyar) prayed to see Vishnu. A beautiful child appeared and, after a scolding, vanished into an iluppa tree. The tree fell and became Vishnu reclining across miles of forest. The sage begged him to shrink to a size he could worship and circumambulate, and offered him a meal in a coconut shell, which is still recalled in temple ritual.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Kerala's Aitihyamala and local lore tell of the sealed vault guarded by serpents that must never be opened by human hands, and of the royal family's strict personal vows of service. The deity is so large it is seen in three parts through three doors: face, navel with Brahma on the lotus, and feet.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The reclining Vishnu on the serpent of time (Ananta, 'endless') shows God resting at the still centre of creation, with Brahma rising from his navel. The king who calls himself the god's servant expresses the idea that power is held in trust.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The treasure debate raises live questions about who owns sacred wealth: the deity, the devotees, the state, or the public. Thrippadidanam, governing as a trustee rather than an owner, is still a useful idea of public service.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
