Rebuilt / restored for worshipNagara (North Indian)12 Jyotirlingas

A Jyotirlinga temple on Mandhata island in the Narmada, which tradition says is shaped like the sacred syllable Om. Built by the Paramaras, damaged in later invasions and rebuilt by the Holkar queens in the 18th century, it is paired with the Mamleshwar temple on the river's south bank.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple stands on Mandhata (also called Shivpuri), an island bounded by the Narmada and its branch the Kaveri. After the Paramaras and Chauhans it suffered in the Sultanate period and was rebuilt by the Holkars of Indore. A cave below the temple is held to be where Adi Shankara met his guru, Govinda Bhagavatpada.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Vindhya, the god of the Vindhya mountains, worshipped Shiva here with a linga of sand and clay to atone for his pride. Shiva appeared in two forms, Omkareshwar and Amaleshwar (Mamleshwar), and the mound took the shape of Om. In another account, King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku line worshipped here until Shiva appeared as a Jyotirlinga, and the island took his name.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

When the asuras defeated the devas, the devas prayed at this spot, and Shiva appeared as Omkareshwar to defeat them. Local tradition holds that Shiva rests here at night, so a ritual bed is prepared for him.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Om is the sound from which, in Hindu thought, all creation unfolds, and the Mandukya Upanishad treats it as the whole of reality. An island in the shape of Om makes the pilgrim's circuit (parikrama) a walk around the source of everything.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Omkareshwar is a stop on the Narmada Parikrama, a walk of thousands of kilometres along India's westward-flowing river. The 108-foot Statue of Oneness of Adi Shankara, unveiled here in 2023, has made it a new centre for Vedanta.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
