A temple on the Bharathapuzha river, where the great Mamankam festival was held every twelve years under the Zamorins of Kozhikode until 1755.
HistoryDocumented history
Thirunavaya, on the banks of the Bharathapuzha (Nila), was the site of the Mamankam, a great fair and festival held every twelve years. From the medieval period it was presided over by the Zamorin of Kozhikode, and warriors of the Valluvanad kingdom fought to the death trying to reach him. The last Mamankam was held in 1755. Across the river stand temples of Brahma and Shiva, so the place is linked with all three gods.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Nine yogis are said to have installed nine images of Vishnu here one after another, and only the ninth stayed, giving the god the name Navamukunda.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Few stories beyond the temple's own legend have been recorded for this shrine; local traditions are still to be collected.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Vishnu standing is the god ready to act: he waits at the door of the shrine to step out and meet anyone who calls on him.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The riverbank is a major place for ancestral rites on the new moon of Karkidakam, and the Mamankam is remembered in a modern revival festival.
